Haka Tours 7 Day North Island Adventure Tour

You will see it all in the ultimate week-long North Island holiday with Haka Tours: volcanoes, beautiful beaches, bubbling mud pools and rich forests, whilst learning about New Zealand's proud Maori culture.

Auckland to Coromandel

Leaving the big smoke of Auckland behind you’ll hit the road heading south to the North Island’s best-kept secret, the Coromandel Peninsula. Beautiful remote beaches, dense rainforest and clear blue coastal waters make the Coromandel one of New Zealand’s favourite getaways. You’ll make your way to the world-famous Hot Water Beach where at low tide, you can dig a hole in the sand allowing the natural hot springs to bubble up creating your own personal hot tub – the perfect spot to relax after all that digging!  You'll arrive in Whitianga with plenty of time for your guide to show you around.

Your Accommodation: Turtle Cove Backpacker Accommodation

Turtle Cove in Whitianga offers clean and welcoming accommodation just a short walk to beautiful Coromandel beaches and the local amenities in town.

Day 2: Travel South to Rotorua

Haka Tours 7 Day North Island Adventure Tour (2020/21) - Day 2

Coromandel to Rotorua

This morning walk along the cliffs and down to Cathedral Cove (which you might recognize from the Chronicles of Narnia). With perfect beaches and massive rock arches and columns, it’s one of the most popular spots in the Coromandel. Alternatively, take an optional guided Cathedral Cove kayak trip and check out this stunning coastline from a different angle, accompanied by a local dolphin or two if you’re lucky! Later this afternoon we head towards Rotorua (or Rotovegas as it is locally known). En route, we’ll visit Matamata - best known for being the home of Hobbiton. For Lord of the Rings fans, a visit to Hobbiton Movie Set is an absolute must-do. On a fully guided tour of the 12 acre Middle-earth set you will see Hobbit Holes, the Mill, and even enjoy a drink at the Green Dragon Inn! If hobbits aren’t your thing there are plenty of scenic short walks to enjoy Matamata’s lush green rolling hills. While the majority of the North Island is volcanic in some way, Rotorua is exceptional for its geothermal activity. With neon blue and red lakes, steaming rivers, active volcanoes and geysers galore, there are more unique natural wonders to be found in Rotorua than many other places in the world.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Cathedral Cove Classic Sea Kayak Tour

Considered one of the best sea kayaking trips in the country the “Cathedral Cove Classic” has got it all.  The Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve opens up a sea kayaking paradise full of beaches, islands and rock gardens that are just waiting to be explored.  Paddle through sea caves, interact with the local marine life and discover the thrill of kayak sailing with the wind on your back. To top it off you land at Cathedral Cove where you will be treated to the 'world famous' cappuccinos and hot chocolates on the beach! Cathedral Cove Sea Kayaking use very stable double sea kayaks and quality safety equipment. No experience is necessary and a qualified guide accompanies throughout and offers full instructions and assistance.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Hobbiton Tour

Discover the real Middle-earth on the most picturesque private farmland, where you can visit the Hobbiton Movie Set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films in a fascinating  2 hour guided tour. Your tour starts with a drive through the picturesque 1,250 acre sheep farm with spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges. Your guide will escort you through the twelve acre site recounting fascinating details of how the Hobbiton Movie set was created. The Hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn, Mill and other structures created for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films can be viewed and you will see how this beautiful piece of Waikato farmland was transformed into The Shire from Middle-Earth.

Your Accommodation: YHA Rotorua

YHA Rotorua is a purpose built backpacker hostel offering backpacker accommodation right beside Kuirau Park, Rotorua’s free geothermal attraction, and only two minutes walk from shops, cafes, restaurants and beautiful Lake Rotorua.

Day 3: Enjoy a day exploring Rotorua

Haka Tours 7 Day North Island Adventure Tour (2020/21) - Day 3

Haka Tours Free Day in Rotorua

Today is a free day to explore Rotorua and its surrounding area. Talk to your guide for the best free things to see and do in the neighbourhood (Kuirau Park’s steaming and hissing mud pools are a great option). There are also a number of optional activities you can choose from. If adrenaline is your thing, the highest commercial waterfall drop in the world, on the Kaituna River, is begging to be conquered on an exhilarating rafting trip. Perhaps you’d like to try thundering down grassy hills in a giant air-cushioned inflatable ball (aka ZORB)? A day trip to Waitomo is another option today. Famous for its glowworms there are a number of ways to experience these twinking creatures up close.  Discover the magic of both the world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves, as well as the enchanting Ruakuri Cave on a ‘2 cave combo’ walking/boat tour. Or you can float along an underground river on a Black Water Rafting trip as the glow worms light your path.  However, you spend today – be sure to get a good night’s sleep as there are more Rotorua adventures tomorrow!

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Lost World Caving Tour

Abseil (rappel) 100m slowly into the Lost World, secured by your guide who abseils alongside. After the approximately 30 minute decent, you embark on your journey back to the surface though another spectacular dry cavern.  The abseil is at least twice the height of any other cave at Waitomo and the beauty of this iconic cavern is unsurpassed. Descend slowly bouncing and turning as the mist filtered light gives unreal qualities to the strange plants and formations.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - The Zorb

The Zorb is a home-grown kiwi invention and is another perfect example of adrenaline seeking at its best. Climb into a ZORB globe and slip slide and spin your way down the track. You are sent on your trip down the hill rolling head over heels, heels over head as the ground and sky go whizzing past in a beautiful mosaic of blue and green while your body is subjected to the soft and relaxing feeling of weightlessness and g-force.  If you’re an adventurer, a thrill seeker or a challenger, then this ride is for you!

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Black Water Rafting - The Black Labyrinth

The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company has been guiding adventurous visitors through Ruakuri Cave since 1987.  They’ve found the very best underground location for their unique style of adventure which will see you black water tubing, clambering, jumping and serenely floating through the subterranean waterways of Ruakuri Cave. Over three hours you'll take leaps of faith over cascading waterfalls, gaze up at limestone ceilings awash with glowworms and lazily float through the dark Ruakuri river.  At the end of your caving adventure you’ll emerge into the daylight of the Waitomo forest.

Rotorua to Murupara

If you’re up for it your day will start with an optional white water rafting or sledging adventure on the Kaituna River, famous for its 7-metre waterfall drop! If this doesn’t sound like you, there is plenty more going on in Rotorua to suit every style, including a range of hot springs and baths to rest your weary bones. Alternatively, you could head over to Matamata and tour the Hobbiton film set from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbiton movies, step into the Green Dragon and sample some of the Hobbiton brews while you’re there.

Day 6: Adveture around Lake Taupo

Haka Tours 7 Day North Island Adventure Tour (2020/21) - Day 6

Explore Taupo

Don’t be alarmed but that beautiful lake you’re looking at - Lake Taupo is actually a giant volcanic crater created 70,000 years ago in one of the biggest eruptions in history.   That was a long time ago and now Taupo is a peaceful holiday destination, except for the screams of tourists throwing themselves out of planes and off bungy ledges. There are heaps of other activities on offer such as quad biking, cruising the lake to see Maori rock carvings, hiking along the shores, mountain biking and even the chance to soak in some of the local geothermal pools. There is definitely an activity for everyone in Taupo and your guide will certainly have plenty of tips and suggestions.  For an epic adventure and something to cross of your bucket list, why not tackle the Tongariro Crossing, considered to be one of the greatest one day hikes in the world.  This 19.4km alpine crossing may be a calf burner but it’s worth every minute for the great views and volcanic landscape. Turquoise and green volcanic lakes greet you at the top, along with vistas that stretch on for miles to the coast. If you’re up for the challenge, you can even scramble up Mt. Ngauruhoe, which depicted Mt. Doom in the Lord of the Rings movies.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Skydive Taupo 12000 ft jump

With your expert tandem skydive instructor, you'll jump out of Skydive Taupo’s pink aircraft from 12,000 feet and into an incredible freefall over the world's most stunning dropzone.  Surrounded by snow tipped peaks and the clean, fresh blue of Lake Taupo, you'll slow from a 200km/h descent to a safe, controlled canopy landing. Skydive Taupo have a great range of tandem skydiving options to choose from, and they'll even pick you up in their own Skydive Taupo limousine to get you smiling early.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Taupo Bungy

The North Island's most popular bungy jump is a real blast. The unique cantilever platform projects out from the cliff-top, above the inviting waters of the Waikato River below.
Whether you choose to bungy solo or tandem, the highly trained crew pride themselves in providing you with an exhilarating and safe bungy experience.  If you want to add even more thrills to your jump, why not try a water touch? Taupo Bungy specialise in getting people wet, whether you'd rather a hand touch or full body submersion, the team will endeavour to deliver a refreshing adventure.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Tongariro Crossing

You will be provided with a return shuttle to the famous Tongariro Crossing; New Zealand's best 1 day walk. This walk takes you through the Tongariro National Park and World Heritage Area, dominated by three majestic volcanoes, Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Ruapehu.  During your 19 km hike, you'll follow a well-formed track leading up the saddle between Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro. The landscape on Tongariro is peppered with the different coloured and shaped craters, scoured volcanic rocks, mountain springs, and brightly coloured emerald lakes.
