Manapouri
Located just 21 km south of Te Anau, the tranquil township of Manapouri sits on the eastern shore of its namesake, Lake Manapouri. This quiet settlement is not just a destination but also a crucial gateway to one of Fiordland's most spectacular and remote wonders: Doubtful Sound. The bustling hub of the town is Pearl Harbour, the departure point for tours and ferries that traverse Lake Manapouri, transporting visitors to the beginning of their Doubtful Sound adventure. From here, guests embark on journeys offering an immersive experience of the fjord's untouched wilderness. Manapouri also plays a significant role in New Zealand's energy infrastructure. The township serves as a supply point for the country's largest hydropower station, situated on the opposite shore of the lake. The power generated here is a key resource, originally constructed to supply the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter near Bluff.
Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise from Manapouri with RealNZ
From Pearl Harbour, Manapouri, you cruise across picturesque Lake Manapouri to West Arm and then travel by coach over Wilmot Pass through dense rainforest. There are opportunities along the way to examine plant life and view the spectacular scenery. Once at Doubtful Sound you board the catamaran, Commander Peak, for a 3 hour cruise of beautiful Doubtful Sound to the Tasman Sea. On board, there is excellent viewing of waterfalls, rainforest and mountains. Of particular interest, if sighted, are fur seals basking on the rocks, or a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins. Rare Fiordland crested penguins are sometimes encountered in the right season. An interesting onboard commentary keeps you informed and on the return journey, the vessel's engines are turned off and visitors are treated to the 'Sound of Silence'. Includes picnic boxed lunch.
Doubtful Sound Fiordland Navigator Overnight Cruise
Take in the tranquillity of remote Doubtful Sound on this unique overnight wilderness cruise. Beginning in Manapouri with a short boat ride across the lake, you'll be taken by coach over the Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove, Doubtful Sound. Board the Fiordland Navigator, a purpose-built vessel designed like a traditional coastal trading scow. Be accommodated in a private cabin with an ensuite bathroom or a quad-share bunk room with shared bathroom facilities. The Navigator has a large spacious deck for viewing the scenery and wildlife as well as a dining saloon, bar and observation lounge. As you take in the stunning scenery of the Fiord, you'll be provided with a running commentary of the area and its history, points of interest and wildlife. You'll have the opportunity to see dolphins, fur seals and, if you're lucky rare Fiordland penguins. After anchoring in a sheltered cove, choose to explore the shoreline by kayak or stabicraft, or if you're really brave take a dip in the water. In the evening enjoy a buffet dinner prepared on board and served in the dining saloon. Enjoy beer and fine wines from the licensed bar, and spend time star gazing on the upper deck. Following hearty cooked breakfast the next morning you will spend your remaining time exploring other parts of the fiord before returning to Deep Cove for the trip back to Manapouri.
