Matakana
The small town of Matakana has recently become a centre for some of the finest wines and produce in the Auckland region. The region is also a foodie paradise, renowned for its vibrant Matakana Village Farmers' Market every Saturday, where you can indulge in artisan treats, fresh produce, and delicious coffee amidst live music. Art lovers will appreciate the nearby Morris & James pottery, whose distinctive work has become highly collectable. For those seeking coastal adventures, the stunning white sandy beaches of Omaha, Leigh, and Pakiri are just a short drive away. Dive into the underwater wonderland of Goat Island Marine Reserve for snorkelling and diving, or explore the natural beauty and wildlife at Tāwharanui Regional Park.
Goat Island Marine Reserve
Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve (better known as Goat Island), was New Zealand’s first marine reserve created in 1975. Covering 518 hectares the marine reserve is a fantastic place for families to encounter New Zealand’s diverse marine flora and fauna. Snorkelling is the best way to get close to the fish, crustaceans and other marine life that call this sheltered shoreline home and you can hire all your snorkelling gear direct from the beach. Small children can happily explore the rocky pools and the fascinating communities that live within and there are plenty of picnic spots nearby when you need a break from the water.
