Punakaiki
Nestled on the rugged and raw West Coast, Punakaiki is a place where nature puts on a dramatic show. This small coastal town is the gateway to Paparoa National Park and is home to one of New Zealand's most famous natural wonders: the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes.
Carved by the power of the Tasman Sea over millions of years, the Pancake Rocks are a geological marvel. Layer upon layer of compressed limestone and sandstone have created a bizarre stack of rock formations that truly resemble giant stacks of pancakes. At high tide, a spectacular sight awaits as the sea surges into caverns beneath the rocks, erupting through vertical blowholes in a thunderous spray.
Beyond the main attraction, Punakaiki offers a deep connection to the wild West Coast environment. You can explore the lush native rainforest and coastal flora on short walks like the Truman Track, which leads to a stunning coastal arch and a secluded beach. The area is also known for its local art and craft galleries, providing a great opportunity to find a special souvenir.
