Can visitors claim tax back on purchases made in New Zealand?

No, visitors generally cannot claim tax back on purchases made in New Zealand. GST is included in most retail prices, and New Zealand does not have a tourist refund scheme for goods you buy here and take home in your luggage.

New Zealand’s system is different from countries that offer airport tax refund desks for departing visitors. If you buy clothing, souvenirs, gifts, electronics or other retail items while touring New Zealand, the GST included in the price is normally part of the final cost.

GST on visitor purchases

GST is New Zealand’s goods and services tax. It applies to most goods and services sold in New Zealand, including many things travellers buy during a holiday. Visitors must pay GST on any goods or services bought here in the same way as New Zealand residents.

That means you won’t usually receive a tax invoice that can be used for a personal tourist refund later. Keeping receipts is still sensible for your own records, travel insurance claims or warranty matters, but receipts won’t let you reclaim GST at the airport.

Duty-free and exported goods

There are limited ways to buy without GST, but they need to be arranged before you take the goods with you. Departing travellers can’t get GST refunds on items purchased in New Zealand, but GST-free buying may apply when goods are bought from a duty-free shop, exported by the supplier, or delivered to an airside location after Customs and security.

For example, if you buy jewellery or a larger gift during your tour and want it supplied tax-free, ask the retailer before purchasing. Once you’ve taken the item away from the shop and used it during your travels, it’s usually treated as a normal GST-inclusive purchase.

What this means while touring

Budget on the basis that shop prices already include GST unless a retailer clearly explains a duty-free or export arrangement. This is helpful for visitors from countries where tax is added at the register, because New Zealand shelf prices are usually the price you pay.

Tour prices, accommodation, meals, activities and transport arrangements can also include GST where it applies. Your quote or invoice will show what applies to your booking, but international visitors should not expect a separate tourist tax refund after leaving New Zealand.
