Christchurch Airport is the main gateway for many South Island tours, with domestic and international flights in one integrated terminal. Allow time for arrivals, baggage, biosecurity, transfers and domestic connections, especially if your tour starts the same day or includes onward travel.
Christchurch is a common arrival point for tours that include Canterbury, Mount Cook, Queenstown, the West Coast, Milford Sound or the TranzAlpine train. Some travellers start their tour in Christchurch, while others connect through the airport before joining a South Island itinerary.
Arriving from overseas
International arrivals go through passport control, baggage collection, customs and biosecurity before reaching the public arrivals area. Every traveller arriving in New Zealand needs to complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration before or on arrival.
New Zealand’s biosecurity checks are strict, so declare food, plant material, animal products, used outdoor gear and any other risk items. If you’ve packed walking shoes, hiking poles or outdoor equipment, make sure they’re clean and easy to access if inspected.
Processing times can vary, especially when several flights arrive close together. If you’re meeting a transfer, your flight number and arrival time should be supplied before travel.
Domestic and international connections
Christchurch Airport has domestic and international services within the same integrated terminal, which makes connections more straightforward than airports with separate terminal buildings. You still need to allow enough time for baggage, check-in, security and any airline requirements.
If you’re connecting from an international arrival to a domestic flight, don’t assume your bags will move automatically. Depending on your ticket and airline arrangements, you may need to collect your luggage, clear border checks and check in again.
Domestic luggage limits may be different from your international allowance, so check your e-ticket before packing.
Transfers and tour starts
Your confirmed itinerary should show whether an airport transfer is included. If it is, check the meeting point, arrival date, flight number and what to do if your flight is delayed.
If a transfer isn’t included, taxis, rideshare services, shuttles, rental cars and public transport are available from the airport area. For tours starting the next morning, check whether your first hotel is near the airport, central Christchurch or the tour departure point.
