Is travel insurance included in the tour price?

Travel insurance is not usually included in the price of a New Zealand tour. You’ll normally need to arrange your own cover for cancellation, medical costs, delays, luggage and unexpected changes. Check your policy against your itinerary, booking conditions and any pre-existing medical needs.

Most New Zealand tour prices cover the travel services listed in your quote, such as accommodation, transport, selected sightseeing and included meals. Travel insurance is normally separate because each traveller’s age, health, country of residence, trip length and cover needs are different.

Cover to arrange separately

A suitable travel insurance policy should match the way you’re travelling. For a New Zealand tour, travellers commonly look for cover for cancellation, amendment costs, medical treatment, hospital care, travel delays, missed connections, lost luggage and personal liability.

Cancellation cover is especially important if you’re paying a deposit or final balance well before departure. If you need to cancel due to illness, injury, family circumstances or another covered reason, your booking conditions and your insurance policy will both matter.

Medical cover is also worth checking carefully. New Zealand has good healthcare, but visitors may still face costs for treatment, medication, ambulance services, specialist care or changes to travel arrangements.

Timing matters

It’s best to arrange travel insurance soon after paying your deposit. Some benefits may only apply if the policy is purchased within a certain time after booking, and pre-existing medical conditions may need to be declared and accepted by the insurer.

Don’t wait until final documents arrive to think about insurance. By then, cancellation fees may already apply under your tour conditions.

What to check before buying a policy

Check whether the policy covers your full travel dates, all countries in your trip, domestic flights, rail journeys, optional activities and any extra nights before or after the tour.

If your itinerary includes activities such as scenic flights, cruising, walking tracks or adventure experiences, confirm they’re covered. If you’re travelling with medication or medical equipment, check the insurer’s requirements before departure.

Your tour consultant can explain the booking conditions for your tour, but only your insurer can confirm what your policy covers.
